A team of architects and engineers with specialized expertise, the Sustainable Engineering Studio (SES) engages with every type of project at SOM—from urban-scale master plans to individual buildings and interiors. The group brings a rigorously technical and data-informed approach, collaborating to address environmental impact at every step of the design process. Beyond shaping our own projects, SES now offers an expanded range of services that include evaluating emissions across the lifecycle of a single building, portfolio, or master plan to guide carbon reduction strategies.
In this interview, three leaders of the studio—Marzia Sedino in Chicago, Mina Hasman in London, and Shona O’Dea in San Francisco—discuss SOM’s legacy of environmental design, their role in advocating for decarbonization, and the holistic mindset they bring to sustainability.
