In November 2015, SOM Design Partner Scott Duncan presented the firm's landmark tower for the Guiyang World Trade Center development at the 14th Annual Best Tall Building Awards Symposium, hosted by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. The 380-meter-tall skyscraper, which combines commercial office space with a hotel, is the centerpiece of a new urban district.
Located in a vibrant hillside city center in Guiyang between a mountainous landscape and the Nanming River, the tower is an evolution of the concrete tube structure typology pioneered by SOM's Bruce Graham and Fazlur Khan. In his presentation, Duncan explains how the firm responded to the client's request for an economical, concrete high-rise, and extolls the benefits and performance of the structure as compared to a glass-and-steel skyscraper. Additionally, the inside-out, rounded structure mitigates wind load, as does its tapered form, which also responds to the mixed-use program of the building.
