Preetam Biswas

Principal - Structural Engineering

New York

As Director of Structural Engineering, Preetam Biswas led the structural design of several award-winning towers, long-span structures such as airports, convention centers and stadiums, and specialty structures like cable wall systems. He excels at designing innovative yet simple and constructible structural systems for tall and supertall towers, as well as for large and small scale structures with complex geometries. Notable work includes: Shenzhen Shum-Yip in Shenzhen and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai. At the former, Biswas introduced an innovative ladder-core system that allows for unobstructed views and floor plate simplicity while enhancing overall design. The latter features a long-span roof covering 70,000 square meters, making it one of the world’s largest roofs without an expansion joint. Biswas is currently leading the structural design of Manhattan West Development, Kuwait University Grand Stadium and Tennis Center, Kempegowda International Airport, and Kansas City International Airport.

Biswas has played a key role in establishing the Structural Engineering group in SOM’s New York office. Over the last decade, he has guided new talent acquisition and introduced innovative strategies for growth. Within the SOM firmwide Structures Practice, his accomplishments include the initiation of new services as part of an integrated project delivery method for the construction phase.

Biswas has authored multiple technical papers and actively participates in various committees. He is a voting member of the ASCE Tall Building Committee and serves as Chair of the Task Committee for Design and Performance of Tall Buildings for Wind. He is also member of the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEoNY) Structural Engineering Licensure Committee.
