In September, Yue Zhu, Thomas Kinzl, Martin Liepmann, and Phil Obayda will speak at Virtual Festival of Facades. The event, an ongoing series of panel discussions and workshops on facade engineering and design, is presented by Zak World of Facades.
On Wednesday, January 22nd, SOM joined the European Space Agency (ESA) to sign a Memorandum of Collaboration (MOC) at ESA’s headquarters in Paris. The announcement—signed by Colin Koop, Design Partner at SOM, and Johann-Dietrich Wörner, Director General of ESA—will expand the scope of SOM and ESA’s existing research into longterm habitation on the Moon.
On October 21st, 2019, Associate Director Georgi Petrov and senior architectural designer Daniel Inocente will co-present a paper on the Moon Village with professor Jeffrey Hoffman of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at the International Astronautical Congress in Washington, D.C. The paper, titled "Master Planning and Space Architecture for a Moon Village," is co-written by SOM, MIT, and the European Space Agency.
The Moon Village has received an honorable mention in Architect Magazine's 2019 R+D Awards. The annual program, now in its 13th year, awards technological advancements in the industry.
On October 1st, 2018, Philip Enquist, Andrew Obendorf, and Benton Johnson spoke at a research symposium at the University of Tennessee (UT) Governor’s Chair for Energy + Urbanism and the UT Institute for Smart Structures. The event was titled "Governor's Chair Large-Scale Additive Manufacturing in Design."
In collaboration with SOM, researchers from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center are leading a new program to advance innovations in 3D-printed structures. The research demonstrates that a concrete barracks with a precast roof can be engineered to be structurally safe for occupancy.
SOM will participate in the 2018 symposium of the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures, an event for which SOM is also one of the sponsors. SOM Partner William Baker and others will deliver presentations at the symposium.
SOM Technical Director Lucas Tryggestad and Architectural Design Professional Kyle Vansice will speak at Building Design + Construction's Accelerate Live conference on May 10th, 2018. The two will discuss how data and digital fabrication are inspiring new innovations in design.
On December 6th, 2017, Brian Lee was honored at the HIVE 50 conference. At the event, which centered on a discussion of the future of housing, Lee shared insight on AMIE 1.0, a research and design collaboration that shares energy between a 3D-printed, natural gas–powered vehicle and a 3D-printed building.
