Zhong Hong Tower creates an iconic landmark at the gateway to Beijing’s Central Business District. The 180-meter-tall office building sits at the prominent intersection of East 4th Ring Road and Chaoyang Road, at the eastern edge of the SOM-designed Beijing Central Business District East Expansion.

The tower’s bold design exemplifies SOM’s approach to integrating architecture and structure. A diagrid system of profiled steel wraps the exterior. With the structure pushed to the building’s perimeter, its interiors are opened up to accommodate flexible, uninterrupted office space. On the exterior, the diagrid structure is sufficiently deep to provide solar shading.

The tower is divided into six volumes that shift back and forth within the overall structural framework, creating a series of dramatic, light-filled atrium spaces. These grand rooms, each six stories high, enliven the building and allow for a more integrated and connected office. The signature flexible social spaces throughout the tower afford spectacular views of the Beijing skyline from every floor.
