On August 11, Memphis marked a historic moment for its airport with the official renaming and dedication of Memphis International Airport as Frederick W. Smith International Airport, honoring the FedEx founder whose vision helped establish the city as one of the world’s leading logistics centers. As part of the celebration, the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority (MSCAA) unveiled The Thread, a new sculptural landmark that will mark this next chapter in the airport’s history and reflect the broader story of Memphis.
The Thread’s continuous form draws inspiration from the Mississippi River, a living thread that has carried commerce, people, and ideas through Memphis for generations. The design brings together the threads that define the city: its connection to aviation, its cultural dynamism, its influential musical legacy, the civil rights history that shaped the nation’s conscience, and the innovative industry connecting Memphis to the future. Rather than presenting these histories as separate narratives, The Thread brings them together—connecting the city’s natural setting and cultural legacy with its global reach and future ambitions.
The 280-foot-diameter structure wraps the airport’s roadway network, rising as high as 60 feet above Winchester Road and Jim McGehee Parkway. A system of curved steel tubes and lightweight mesh creates a sequence of arches that appears to lift, descend, and change as passengers move through the site. Integrated airport naming, welcome messages, and the unchanged MEM code identity orient travelers while establishing a recognizable civic marker.
During the day, the open structure frames views of the airport, roadway, and control tower. At night, illumination transforms the mesh into a field of light that can support changing colors, graphics, and imagery, giving The Thread a changing presence as travelers approach and move through the airport.
The Thread is designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) in collaboration with A2H, architect of record, and DT design studio, local landscape architect, for the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority.
