What will the future stadium look like? Design Partners Colin Koop and Ryan Culligan fielded this question for Dezeen, joining some of the world’s top stadium architects to predict the biggest shift in stadium design over the next decade.
“For too long, stadiums have been treated as short-term containers for spectacle… often discarded long before the end of a reasonable lifespan,” the duo shared with Dezeen. “With a more rigorous performance-driven approach to fabrication, material sourcing, and circularity, venues can move from carbon emitters to carbon sinks.”
These principles informed our design for the Queens Braid, a concept for a major-league soccer stadium that uses mass timber as the primary structural material. Composed of curved, interlocking wooden beams, the design dramatically reduces the upfront carbon impact of construction.
