SOM is proud to announce that Partner and Structural Engineering Leader Mark Sarkisian has been elected to the National Academy of Construction’s Class of 2025, one of the construction industry’s highest honors. He joins a distinguished cohort of 37 new members recognized for their extraordinary contributions to advancing the built environment.
Founded in 1999, the National Academy of Construction (NAC) brings together leaders from across the industry—engineers, architects, constructors, and more—who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, innovation, and service throughout their careers. Membership is by peer nomination and election and honors individuals whose work has significantly improved the effectiveness, safety, and sustainability of construction.
His election to the NAC follows his 2021 induction into the National Academy of Engineering, one of the highest honors granted to an engineer. Members of the Academy are selected for outstanding and tangible contributions to the profession. Sarkisian was recognized for his innovations in aesthetic and efficient tall building design around the world.
He joined SOM in 1985 and became a partner in 2013. Sarkisian holds 15 U.S. and international patents for high-performance seismic and environmentally responsible structural systems for buildings. He is licensed to practice civil and structural engineering in more than 30 states and has designed more than 100 building projects, including the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, the NBC Tower in Chicago, the New United States Courthouse in Los Angeles, The Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, the Jin Mao Tower in Shanghai, and the Al Hamra Tower in Kuwait. He has authored the book Designing Tall Buildings: Structure as Architecture.
Sarkisian will be formally inducted at the NAC’s Annual Meeting this fall in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
