Bill Baker Recognized as ASCE Distinguished Member

SOM Consulting Partner William F. Baker has been elevated to the 2024 class of Distinguished Members by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). This recognition is the organization’s highest honor and is bestowed upon individuals who have significantly contributed to the advancement of structural engineering through their exceptional work in design, research, teaching, and professional endeavors, as well as for their leadership in pioneering innovative structures for high-rise buildings worldwide.

ASCE noted Baker’s multi-decade legacy in the field of structural engineering, marking him as one of the foremost experts of our time. His pioneering contributions have been instrumental in the development and application of advanced structural analysis and topology optimization techniques, resulting in groundbreaking, economically viable, and architecturally captivating buildings. Notable among his achievements is the development of the revolutionary “buttressed core” structural system for the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.
