Planners, architects, and community leaders can play a critical role in reconnecting communities, and improving health and quality of life for vulnerable communities. The entrenched and unfair distribution of environmental, social, and economic burdens, stemming from 20th-century redlining, manifest in persistent environmental inequities, and lack of access to essential needs from employment to health care.

On April 28, 2023, American Planning Association’s 2023 National Planning Conference hosted  “Strategies for Equitable Community Development”. During her presentation, SOM Urban Design + Planning Principal Ellen Lou focused on strategies for strengthening social infrastructure and improving health and livability in marginalized neighborhoods.
