The New Medical Education and Research Complex at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has topped out ahead of schedule.
SOM designed the eight-story complex with Wong Tung & Partners Limited (WTPL). The project marks a significant milestone in the advancement of Hong Kong’s ambitions as a global hub for science, technology, medical research, and innovation.
“Achieving this milestone early is a testament to the seamless collaboration among all collaborators on the ground, reflecting our shared drive to pioneer advancements in medical education,” says Managing Partner Vram Malek. “We look forward to the next phases of construction as we bring this vision to life.”
Conceived as a jewel-like glass cube that balances state-of-the-art research with an open, humane environment, the complex brings together teaching, research, and collaborative spaces in a single academic hub. When completed in 2028 it will denote Hong Kong’s third medical school.
Nicolas Medrano, Principal and Asia Pacific Practice Leader, says “Topping out brings the full vision for this new academic hub into view. Our design responds directly to the site to create dynamic, vibrant spaces for learning, interaction, and continuous conversation. Wrapped in a sleek, high-tech facade, the architecture intentionally puts medical discovery and education on display to inspire the entire campus community.”
“The new complex is a transformative step for the local community and the broader city,” adds Design Partner Scott Duncan. “This milestone demonstrates how the cutting edge technology can co-exist with the humane environment, nurturing the next generation of medical professionals.”
