The City of Los Angeles has officially approved the entitlement plans for Centro Westlake, marking a definitive step forward for the transit-oriented development at the Westlake/MacArthur Park subway station.
Designed by SOM, the development centers on a reimagined transit environment. The current design evolution is the outcome of a collaborative process with Metro and the community. Framed by two-story retail pavilions, a new central open-air plaza stretches out to connect to the bustling intersection of Wilshire and Alvarado. The plan introduces a network of pedestrian pathways and a dedicated “mobility hub” designed to make the station more accessible and safer for the thousands of people who pass through it daily. Two towers, rising 39 and 55 stories, introduce a series of elevated terraces and mixed use programs that will bring 24-7 activation to the project.
The project will deliver 668 residential units—including 234 affordable homes—alongside a 300-room hotel, 105,000 square feet of office space, and a 10,000-square-foot medical office facility. At street level, more than 50,000 square feet of retail and vendor-oriented spaces will line the plaza, with 20 percent of that space specifically reserved for local Westlake businesses to ensure the community shares in the project’s growth.
By mixing housing, transit, commerce and community programming, Centro Westlake serves as a new model for sustainable urbanism in Los Angeles. With entitlements secured, the project now moves toward finalizing a joint development agreement with Metro.
