Following a decade-long transformation, the Waldorf Astoria New York has received a 2026 Excellence in Historic Preservation Award from the Preservation League of New York State. This program celebrates projects across the state that “open our eyes to overlooked history and save the places that are most special to all of us.”
Drawing on extensive research into the building’s architectural history and role in the city, we collaborated with Higgins Quasebarth & Partners, Building Conservation Associates, and countless other designers, consultants, and artisans to recapture the Waldorf Astoria New York’s 1931 splendor—inside and out—while repositioning the hotel for its next chapter.
“Few buildings have a legacy like the Waldorf Astoria New York,” said Principal Frank Mahan. “Upholding that legacy is an incredible responsibility, but we believe that through preservation we can create a bridge to the future. The result is a methodical work of preservation, a meticulous restoration, and a comprehensive transformation all at once. Through both research and creativity, we’ve reestablished Schulze & Weaver’s original design intent while upgrading the building for its next 100 years.”
