Where urbanism and nature connect

SOM has envisioned an environmentally conscious, 21st-century urban future for a 200-hectare site within an industrial corridor north of Hangzhou. Located near the Banshan Mountains in Hangzhou’s Old Town District, the Hanggang Station, which connects transit users via two converging lines, will anchor the restoration of the site’s  connection to its natural surroundings.

The proposed design incorporates elements of today’s industrial park into an emerging urban development, where natural beauty and industrial heritage set the foundation for a transit-oriented development (TOD) between the Banshan Mountains and the Grand Canal. Hanggang Station will apply TOD principles to create a mixed-use, low-carbon district that prioritizes its relationship with surrounding open spaces.

Creating memorable spaces

The plan reimagines the existing Pinglian Road as the renamed Central Avenue which will connect the Banshan Mountains, a proposed Steel Heritage Park, and Steel Station TOD to nearby natural resources. This will create a regional eco-framework that  culminates at the Metro Gateway Park, where human-scaled buildings connect to form a multilevel park with views to the mountains and access to a multimodal transportation hub.

Perched atop the existing warehouses, a new structure with incubator offices will infuse new energy into the entire complex. These are accessed via a glass-enclosed elevator that offers sweeping views, a sky lobby above the new canopy, and a shared amenity floor.
