SOM’s Jackson Square Workplace Renovation has been featured by Workplace Design, a newly launched digital publication spotlighting the evolving landscape of the modern professional office. Located in San Francisco’s historic Jackson Square District, this interior renovation and structural intervention reimagines a 19th century livery stable and carriage house into a state-of-the-art workplace for an investment firm.

Prioritizing the well-being of its users, the strategic renovation brings fresh air and daylight into the four-story historic building while extending its relevance and utility well into the future. The intervention removes a portion of the third floor, amplifying the reach of natural light from existing skylights and windows all the way down to the lobby, enhancing the overall atmosphere and health for the staff. A new stair connects all four levels from the nearly 14-foot-tall lobby, which doubles as a reception area and event space.
“Working at this scale demands more creativity, as we are not able to rely on repetition or economies of scale typical with larger projects,” said SOM Associate Principal Michelle Hatton. “This approach led us to a bespoke outcome, with one-of-a-kind spaces throughout that really suit the users’ needs.”

The design offers a rich tapestry of space types, lighting conditions, and materials to create a workplace that thoughtfully responds to a wide range of user needs and working styles. From warm, intimate zones to bright, open environments, the varying light levels accommodate neurodiverse preferences and support both focused, individual work and collaborative team efforts. Biophilic design principles are woven throughout with plantings on every level, exposed wood structural elements, and natural materials.
