Short Film Illustrating SOM’s Moon Village Wins Big at Festivals

Still from Life Beyond Earth

Life Beyond Earth, an animated short film that brings to life SOM and ESA’s Moon Village concept, capped a recent string of award wins at the Lovie Awards on November 17. At a ceremony that also featured ABBA, Russell Brand, and Adwoa Aboah, the film won gold in the video animation category.

Directed and produced by VFX studio Revenant, Life Beyond Earth was created as a part of SOM and ESA’s installation of the same name at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. It has since gone on to earn considerable acclaim in its own right, and is now on display in a new exhibition at the Espacio Fundación Telefónica in Madrid.

The film, narrated by MIT AeroAstro professor and former NASA astronaut Jeffrey A. Hoffman, illustrates how an individual habitable module could be transported from Earth to the Moon and installed within the Moon Village. Its striking imagery and deft storytelling push viewers to imagine the possibilities — and the challenges — of establishing a permanent human settlement in space.

In addition to the recent Lovie Award, Life Beyond Earth has also been named a Grand Winner at the 2021 NYX Video Awards, a Best Animation winner at the New York International Film Awards, a Silver Medalist at the 2021 Brooklyn SciFi Film Festival, and a Canopus Winner for animation at the Vega Awards.
