Otemachi One Garden Opens with Week-Long Celebration

Otemachi One

The final piece of Otemachi One, a new, 6,000-square-meter garden that complements one of the largest mixed-use developments undertaken in Tokyo’s Otemachi district, opened to the public on Friday, December 16. Mitsui & Co., Ltd. and Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd., the developers of the project, are celebrating the opening in a series of events running through Christmas. The event series, called Winter Bloom, featured a live performance by world-renowned floral artist Nicolai Bergmann—as well as a light show and other art installations currently underway—to create colorful flower displays throughout the outdoor spaces.

The landscaping comprises one the most expansive green spaces in the dense area just outside the Imperial Palace, and uses native plants, a reflecting pool, and a 3,000-square-meter urban green, including lawns, to offer visual variety, biodiversity, and vast spaces for events. The design also preserves the site of Masakado’s Shrine, seamlessly integrating the historical monument within the new park.

The Otemachi One Garden weaves around the site’s two towers, which opened in February 2020 and add offices, retail, event halls, and a Four Seasons Hotel to the edge of the Imperial Palace in a bustling urban center. The towers relate to their surroundings both through their scale and detailing. At 160 meters, the shorter tower faces the palace and draws inspiration from traditional Japanese craftsmanship in its masonry facade. The taller tower, which rises 200 meters, embodies the aesthetics of contemporary Japan with a facade of glass and steel. Underground, additional public amenities include retail spaces, restaurants, a direct connection to the Tokyo Metro, and health and wellness services for tenants.
