SOM Proposes A Design For A Building That Absorbs Carbon Throughout Its Life Cycle

How can we design for carbon reduction? Forbes sits down with our Sustainability Lead and Senior Associate Principal Mina Hasman to discuss SOM’s proposal to reduce construction emissions in tall buildings by up to 95 percent through a combination of design strategies and a biomass material we have been developing with Prometheus Materials.

“Our vision is a network of Urban Sequoias that absorb, store and exchange carbon in all cities in the way trees interact with each other in a forest,” Mina Hasman says. “This would enable us to go beyond net zero to carbon negative and regenerative cities all around the world.”
