The Moscone Center Expansion has received the 2021 Honor Award in Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement (OCEA) by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Established in 1960, the OCEA award program recognizes engineering projects that meet complex challenges through skillful planning and innovative use of materials.
Designed by SOM with Mark Cavagnero Associates, the Moscone Center Expansion includes multiple buildings and structures: the renovation of Moscone North; the new three-story, structural steel Moscone South building; a pair of elevated pedestrian bridges; and an expansion that connects the subterranean portion of the site below Howard Street. To deliver this complex project, SOM’s structural engineers worked with a team that included Tipping Structural Engineers and SOHA Engineers.
The renovated Moscone Center creates less carbon emissions per visitor than any major convention center in the world. It is the only convention space in the United States to achieve LEED Platinum status.
