Mark Sarkisian

On Thursday, March 10th, Mark Sarkisian, SOM Structural and Seismic Engineering Partner, will deliver this year’s John A. Blume Distinguished Lecture at Stanford University. Hosted each year by the Blume Earthquake Engineering Center, the lecture series honors an accomplished engineer who has advanced the field of structural engineering. Considering structures as a form of collective art, Mark will speak about self-stabilizing structures built by skilled labor, applications of machine learning, and potential futuristic approaches using robotics.

With a wealth of experience in seismic and structural engineering, Mark Sarkisian has developed innovative structural engineering solutions for more than 100 major projects around the world. He holds fourteen U.S. and international patents for high-performance seismic structural mechanisms that are designed to protect buildings in areas of high seismicity, and for the design of environmentally responsible structural systems. Routledge–Taylor & Francis recently released the second edition of his book, Designing Tall Buildings: Structure as Architecture, which is the definitive book on tall building design taught at Stanford, Northwestern, and UC Berkeley, among other universities.
