SOM Wins International Design Competition for R&D Innovation Campus in Shenzhen

Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Innovation Park won first place in an international competition for the proposal, “A Valley Within the Machine,” designed in conjunction with China Architecture Design & Research Group.

In accordance with the development plan by the State Council, the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong (SZHK) Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone is positioned as a pilot zone for SZHK science and technology innovation open cooperation zones, an experimental zone for international advanced science and technology innovation rules, and a gathering zone for trial transformation in the Greater Bay Area. The aim is to build a world-class science and technology innovation hub, conduct frontier scientific exploration, key technology research and development, master a batch of core common key technologies, and provide strong support for the construction of an international first-class science and technology innovation center in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

SOM’s design proposal aims to build a new landmark for R&D campus in the region, with a convergence of machine and nature. Our design celebrates physical and mental wellness and provides incubators for scientific innovation, while promoting social collaboration among researchers. A variety of outdoor spaces emphasize the importance of renewal within the natural environment and offer a sustainable, park-like setting for the city.

“The intelligent integration of a highly tuned laboratory machine that immerses users within an ecological network will support the new campus as a world-class research destination,” said Design Partner Michael Duncan. “The highest quality design is one that will last and adapt.”
