Every project presents an opportunity to develop greener ways of building, and that mindset guides our approach to design and engineering. Efficiency lies at the core of our structural engineering practice, from finding ways to solve complex site challenges to minimizing the carbon impact of construction. SOM is excited to share this expertise in the American Institute of Steel Construction’s (AISC) upcoming Sustainability Design Guide. Experts from Skanska USA Buildings, Inc. and Nucor Steel Corporation, as well as Northeastern University’s Jerome F. Hajjar, PE, PhD, will round out the list of authors.
“This is a fantastic team,” said AISC Vice President of Sustainability and Government Relations Brian Raff. “There is a lot of confusion out there about sustainable materials and designs, and these experts are perfectly positioned to provide clarity and guidance.”
The Sustainability Design Guide will help architects and engineers establish and apply best practices for sustainable design and construction with steel—including cutting-edge strategies for steel deconstruction and reuse. AISC expects to release the new guide in early 2026.
“SOM is thrilled to author AISC’s transformative Sustainability Design Guide alongside our esteemed collaborators Nucor, Skanska, and Professor Jerry Hajjar,” said SOM Associate Principal David Shook. “This partnership unites leading industry expertise to equip designers with practical, actionable insights for advancing sustainable design.”
