SOM Graphics designed a 36-inch modular carpet collection with powerful three-dimensional designs that visually sculpt the floor and create different architectural perspectives in macro versus micro applications. To shape the imagery, the multidisciplinary team drew inspiration from urban skylines, aerial views of airports, bridges and cities, and geological formations such as glaciers, bedrock, and lakes. The result is a product that strongly relates to mass, geometry, and architecture.
The collection harnesses a new high-definition technology from Milliken that is distinctive for its ability to create visual depth. With its precise resolution and clarity, the technology allowed SOM and Milliken designers to create fine gradations of color and layers of visual texture that simulate dimension. The three patterns created — Riverbed, Urbanscape, and Forcefield — have the ability to turn a floor plane into an intriguing and unpredictable terrain.
