Associate Principal - Science Practice Leader

New York

Based in Atlanta, Nick Kahler leads SOM’s science practice, as well as business development for all project types in the southeastern United States. With extensive experience designing laboratories and hospitals for a range of clients, including higher education, government, healthcare, and commercial developers, he brings a multidisciplinary perspective to his work.

Creating excitement for discovery means deeply understanding how labs work now and how they might work best in an unknown future. We have to embrace the idea of change, because science itself is always evolving.

Nick specializes in the programming, planning, and design of buildings that involve complex requirements while creating an inspiring setting for research and discovery. His projects include interior fit-outs, ground-up buildings, and campus master plans, beginning at the earliest phases to merge a client’s aspirations with the technical rigor required for science facilities. From the New York City Public Health Laboratory to the life science lab Elementum in Singapore, Nick designs ambitious laboratories that are as efficient as they are adaptable to future changes in technology and scientific practices.
