George Tingwald, MD, AIA is a physician-architect with more than four decades of experience advancing healthcare design through the integration of clinical insight and design innovation. One of only a small number of professionals in the United States licensed as both a physician and an architect, he serves as Director of Healthcare Design at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), where he helps steward complex healthcare projects from visioning through implementation. George joins SOM after nearly two decades as Director of Medical Planning at Stanford University Medical Center and more than 30 years of contributions to the Facilities Guidelines Institute. His career includes pioneering the integration of patient advisory groups into the design process and the development of the widely adopted Interventional Platform model. A recognized leader in thoughtful, human-centered healthcare design, he is a Changemaker Award recipient and serves on the board of the National Organization for Arts in Health.
