Anthony Treu leads SOM’s growing healthcare practice, where he is shaping a new vision for care environments around the world. Driven by the conviction that architecture has the power to fundamentally improve the experience of healthcare, he is leading transformative projects that center the patient experience, leverage new technologies to rethink how care will be delivered, and create resilient new campuses for the world’s leading medical institutions—from Austin to Bangkok.
Recognizing that hospitals often serve as the backdrop for life’s most challenging and pivotal moments, Anthony is designing environments that alleviate stress, foster healing, and support human well-being. He works closely with clinicians and communities to create architecture that enhances the wellbeing of patients, elevates the clinical workplace, and adds to the life of the communities they serve.
Reinventing healthcare means working with our clients to fundamentally reimagine how care could be delivered. By working together, we can discover meaningful—and often surprising—solutions for patients, providers, and society at large.
Anthony’s work has garnered national and international recognition, including a 2024 AIA National Healthcare Design Honor Award for the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University—a project that exemplifies his patient-centric approach and was also featured in Healthcare Design magazine’s 2023 cover story. Beyond his design work, Anthony is an influential voice in healthcare design, regularly speaking about the urgent need to rethink the status quo in light of rapid medical, technological, and societal change. His perspectives, shaped by both professional experience and personal encounters with the healthcare system, have been shared widely—including in his essay for The Cancer Letter reflecting on the future of cancer care environments.
