SOM Structural and Civil Engineering Partner William F. Baker will participate in a symposium on Japanese structural design at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City on Saturday, April 30th. “Structural Lineages: Learning from Japanese Structural Design” will focus on Japan’s rich architectural history, and will include expert speakers in architecture, engineering, and academia.
Baker will lead a presentation on the work of Japanese structural engineer Mutsuro Sasaki, founder of Sasaki and Partners (SAP). Delving into Sasaki’s extensive portfolio of groundbreaking work, Baker will illustrate SAP’s unique approach to design at the intersection of structure and architecture. Presented in conjunction with MoMA’s current exhibition, “A Japanese Constellation: Toyo Ito, SANAA, and Beyond,” Baker will join six leading structural engineers from around the world to discuss developments in Japanese structural design from 1950 through today.
