







Two SOM-designed projects—the New United States Courthouse in Los Angeles and Sunset | La Cienega Residences—received three awards in the 2017 AIA|LA? Design Awards. ?The annual competition is organized by the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA|LA).
This year’s winning projects, announced on Monday, October 30th,? were selected in three categories: Design Awards, Next LA Awards, and COTE Awards. The Design Awards honor excellence in design by spotlighting significant completed projects from around the United States?; ?the Next LA Awards recognize projects that are not yet completed; and COTE Award recipients are selected based on demonstrable achievements in sustainability.?
The New United States Courthouse received an Honor Award, the highest category, in the Design Awards category, as well as an Honor Award in the COTE Awards category.? The 10-story, 633,000-square-foot ?courthouse is a new civic landmark for the city. It houses the U.S. District Court of the Central District of California, accommodates the needs of the U.S. Marshals Service, and provides trial preparation space for the U.S. Attorney’s Office and Federal Public Defender.?
Sunset | La Cienega Residences received a Citation Award in the Design Awards program. Located on one of the most prominent intersections in the L.A. region, the mixed-use project includes 190 residential units in two 8-story towers that rise above a 30,000-square-foot retail podium.? The complex harnesses the site’s inherent complexity and the neighborhood’s world-renowned cultural legacy to create a new hub of urban activity, reactivating the heart of the iconic Sunset Strip.?
