Tropicana Selects SOM for Major Waterfront Transformation in Johor Bahru, Malaysia

Tropicana Corporation Berhad has appointed SOM to lead the master plan for Lido Waterfront Boulevard (LIDO), a 163-acre development in Johor Bahru. Envisioned as a sustainable smart city, the project will bring together residential, commercial, wellness, education, hospitality, recreational, and lifestyle components to create a vibrant new district on Malaysia’s southern coast. The appointment marks a renewed collaboration between SOM and Tropicana, following our successful work on the 55-story W Hotel and Residences in Kuala Lumpur.

“Lido Waterfront Boulevard has the potential to become one of Malaysia’s most intriguing cultural and civic destinations—a place that celebrates the nation’s heritage and values while prioritizing livability, resiliency, and connectivity,” said SOM Urban Design Partner Douglas Voigt. “We’re excited to reimagine urban life through a vibrant public realm that strengthens the social and cultural fabric of Johor Bahru.”

SOM brings decades of experience in delivering transformative urban plans across the globe—from New York’s World Trade Center and Dubai’s Burj Khalifa to major developments in Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur. The Lido master plan will build on this global perspective to shape a future-ready, climate-conscious waterfront community in the heart of Johor.
