On Thursday, June 8th, an opening reception will mark the start of “The Engineering of Architecture” on display at AIT-ArchitekturSalon in Hamburg, Germany. This is the fourth presentation of the traveling exhibition since its premiere at the Architekturgalerie in Munich in January 2016. It has also been presented at the Utzon Center in Aalborg, Denmark, and the AIT-ArchitekturSalon in Cologne. The exhibition will remain on view in Hamburg through Friday, July 7th.
For more than 80 years, SOM has developed groundbreaking structural engineering solutions for some of the world’s most complex built projects. From the Sears Tower (now Willis Tower) in Chicago to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the firm’s integrated approach to structural engineering has defined city skylines and advanced the field of architecture.
“The Engineering of Architecture” tells this story through a range of media including models, video, photography, drawings, sculpture, and interactive animations. The exhibition is anchored around 20 skyscrapers designed for 10 cities across the world, each modeled at 1:500 scale. The show delves into SOM’s storied history of research, design, and realization of cutting-edge buildings and displays some of the firm’s most complex and innovative projects.
