SOM Participates in New York Build 2019 Expo

In March 2019, SOM Associate Director Brian Kaplan and SOM senior architectural professional Ellen Abraham will speak at the New York Build 2019 Expo. The two-day event, which will take place at the Javits Center in Manhattan, will feature panel discussions, workshops, and other sessions focused on contemporary issues in the construction industry.

On Tuesday, March 12th, Abraham will deliver chairperson’s opening remarks. She will also give a presentation titled “Community Engagement — Architects as Agents of Change” and speak on a panel titled “Diversity in Construction.” In addition to her role as presenter and panelist, Abraham serves as a Women in Construction Ambassador for the 2019 Expo, an initiative created by the event to drive equality and diversity in construction-related fields.

On Wednesday, March 13th, Kaplan will speak on a panel titled “Design for Well-Being.” Kaplan will share insight on SOM’s approach to designing for health and well-being in the modern workplace. As technology erases the physical boundaries between work and life, it has become increasingly difficult to maintain a work-life balance. The modern workplace must therefore offer the joy and balance humans crave, while providing opportunities for work to enrich our personal lives. SOM aims to design workplaces that celebrate us as individuals, support our humanity, and help us establish and nourish a well-integrated life.
