At the 2015 Los Angeles Architectural Awards on June 18, 2015, the Los Angeles Business Council (LABC) announced that the New United States Courthouse – Los Angeles, designed by SOM, won an Under Construction Award. SOM Design Director Jose Palacios, SOM Associate Director Steven Zimmerman, and SOM project team members Garth Ramsey and Brian Hart attended the gala luncheon at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
Currently under construction in downtown Los Angeles, the new federal courthouse will have a strong civic presence rooted in classic principles. SOM’s design for the facility optimizes workflow and promotes efficient operations and maintenance. The building is designed to achieve LEED® Platinum certification, with sustainable features such as a serrated facade that maximizes views yet also reduces solar heat gain by nearly 50 percent.
Celebrating its 45th anniversary, LABC’s annual awards program recognizes a diverse selection of architectural projects for their design excellence and community impact. This year, the corresponding event drew 600 of the region’s leading architects, designers, building professionals, and media. Entire project teams — including building owners, designers, contractors, and developers — were honored for their contributions to exceptional design in Los Angeles County and beyond.
