On Friday, March 8th, SOM Associate Directors Jon Cicconi and Frank Mahan will lead a hard hat construction tour of Moynihan Train Hall for the AIANY Historic Buildings Committee. The tour will provide insight into the current status of the project to convert McKim, Mead & White’s 1913 Beaux-Arts James A. Farley Post Office into Moynihan Train Hall, a state-of-the-art transportation facility. Scheduled for completion in 2020, Moynihan Train Hall is a critical part of the larger redevelopment of Penn Station, which is located across Eighth Avenue.
SOM has played a leading role in the design of the civic project. The new Moynihan Train Hall will celebrate the history of the Farley Post Office by re-opening the central atrium, which has been shrouded since WWII. The courtyard will be restored to its original sky-lit state with an iconic new skylight, connected by original steel trusses to enclose the new boarding concourse. The new station will provide much-needed extra capacity to the region’s rail system, relieving congestion at Penn Station and providing more efficient services to thousands of Amtrak, Long Island Railroad, New Jersey Transit, and Metro-North riders.
