skidmore, owings & merrill (SOM) has announced the design of a new tower, the hangzhou wangchao center, in china. as a city, hangzhou had gone somewhat under the radar, but has seen rapid growth in recent years. these changes are in large part a result of the 2022 asian games, which will take place in the region. the skyscraper will be built at the heart of the metropolis and SOM believes, with reason, that the project will become a beacon of performance-driven design and is emblematic of hangzhou’s future.’
