On Wednesday, November 1st, SOM and MAS Context, a Chicago-based urbanism journal, are hosting a panel discussion in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. The event coincides with the 2017 release of MAS Context’s thirty-first issue. Through essays, photographs, and interviews, the issue explores the development of the city of Bilbao, before and after the construction of the Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim Museum.
SOM, in collaboration with Gehry Partners, led structural engineering efforts for the Guggenheim Bilbao. The Bilbao issue of MAS Context features an interview with John Zils, SOM Associate Partner Emeritus, who served as lead SOM structural engineer on the project. A continuation of the Bilbao issue, the panel discussion will be led by MAS Context Editor in Chief Iker Gil. Panelists Zils and William F. Baker, SOM Structural and Civil Engineering Partner, will share their insights and reflect on the firm’s role in the project.
