On July 22nd, 2020, SOM Director of Urban Design and Planning Dan Ringelstein will speak at the Big 5 Digital Festival Africa virtual conference. The event is the first-ever online gathering of the infrastructure and construction community in Africa.
Italian design magazine Abitare talks with Director of Urban Design and Planning Daniel Ringelstein and Planning Associate Gareth Edwards about four new towns under construction in Africa. The two share insight on SOM's master plans for Alárò City, Appolonia, Jigna Eco-community, and Tatu City.
Two SOM projects won Architizer A+ Popular Choice awards in their respective categories: the Alárò City master plan in the Unbuilt Masterplan category, and Chicago Public Library, West Loop Branch in Architecture - Libraries. The Architizer A+ Popular Choice Winners were selected by the online voting public after a 10 day campaign garnering over 400,000 votes.
Five SOM projects have been selected as Architizer A+ Awards Finalists, ranging in categories from pavilion to library, residential building to masterplan. Popular Choice voting is open until July 5th.
On January 29th, Africa’s largest urban developer, Rendeavour, in partnership with the Lagos State Government, broke ground on a new city development in the Lekki Free Zone. The master plan by SOM is designed to boost foreign direct investment in Nigeria and create tens of thousands of jobs.
