The American Institute of Architects (AIA) recognized three SOM projects in its 2019 Institute Honor Awards program. The Detroit East Riverfront Framework Plan, the New United States Courthouse in Los Angeles, and Optimo Hat Company in Chicago each received an award.
On June 26th, 2018, SOM Associate Director Aaron May will speak at the 2018 International Conference on Transport and Health on Mackinac Island in Michigan. May's presentation is titled "The Detroit Riverfront as Economic Driver: Vision and Partnerships to Fuel Transformation."
The Urban Land Institute (ULI) in Chicago has named SOM senior urban designer Dawveed Scully as the winner of its 2018 Young Visionary Award. Trained as an architect and urbanist, Scully is passionate about design as a tool for empowerment, engagement, and equity.
On Monday, May 14th, the City of Detroit launched the first phase of construction on the Detroit East Riverfront Framework Plan, designed by SOM in partnership with the city and the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy. Work began on the East Jefferson Avenue transit corridor.
