Neil Katz to Speak at University of Toronto Symposium on Digital Design

On September 30th, SOM Associate Neil Katz will present at DIVA Day, an annual symposium on the use of environmental analysis tools in design practice, research, and architectural education. The term DIVA, which stands for “Design, Iterate, Validate, Adapt,” describes an integrated process of realizing complex designs with specialized technology. This year’s symposium is hosted by the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at the University of Toronto.

An advocate for the use of digital design in large-scale projects, Katz uses parametric and analytical digital design tools to realize complex schemes for buildings around the world. In his presentation, titled “DIVA Analysis as a Design Tool,” he will show recent SOM projects that have made meaningful use of digital design technology, and will explore how specialized digital tools aided the development of each project’s final scheme.

Katz will be joined by speakers from leading academic institutions including Cornell University, MIT, and USC, and from the design firms HOK, Perkins+Will, and Kohn Pedersen Fox. DIVA Day has previously been held at the Architectural Association in London, and at MIT.
