Moscone Center Expansion and Improvement Wins a SEAONC Award of Excellence

The Moscone Center Expansion project in San Francisco, designed by SOM with Mark Cavagnero Associates, has been honored with the 2020 Award of Excellence by the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC). The SEAONC Awards recognize models of excellence in structural engineering and the Northern Californian teams behind them.

Completed in 2019, the project includes multiple key components: Moscone North, which has been renovated for contemporary use; Moscone South, a new three-story structural steel building; a pair of pedestrian bridges connecting the north and south superstructures; and an expansion and connection of the subterranean portion of the site below Howard Street. In executing the expansive and complex project, SOM worked with a team of designers and structural engineers that included Tipping Structural Engineers and SOHA Engineers.

The design of the project, centered on flexibility, longevity, and sustainability, enables the center to continue to grow as a major venue for conferences and large-scale gatherings. Moscone Center and the rest of this year’s award recipients will be considered in the Structural Engineers Association of California’s statewide competition.
