The AIA Monterey Bay chapter has presented the Monterey Conference Center with a Citation Award in the 2019 Excellence in Design Awards. Each year, the awards program recognizes projects around the world that have been designed by AIA Monterey Bay members.
The extensive renovation of the Monterey Conference Center transformed a 40-year-old facility into a light-filled, connected, and contemporary civic space. A cantilevered envelope of perforated steel and transparent glass replaced the former concrete and stucco facade to open the facility to its surroundings, while an enlarged lobby with double-height glazing now serves as an active ground floor for event attendees. The renovation, completed in 2018, reused over 80 percent of the original steel and concrete structure.
