On Tuesday, March 22nd, SOM Structural and Seismic Engineering Partner Mark Sarkisian will speak during the Structural Engineering Seminar at Purdue University’s Lyles School of Civil Engineering. In a talk called “Concept Design of Structures for a New Architecture,” he will address how principles of simplicity, structural clarity, and sustainability can lead to the design of buildings that do not contribute to climate change and reduce demands on natural resources. Developing innovative structures at the concept phase, he proposes, provides an important opportunity to influence the architecture in an environmentally responsible way. This early stage of design, in which principles of engineering can be freely applied, is also a moment when the greatest impact on simplicity, structural clarity, and sustainability can be realized.
Having developed innovative structural engineering solutions for over 100 major building projects around the world, Sarkisian holds 14 US and international patents for high-performance seismic structural mechanisms and environmentally responsible structural systems. He is the author of Designing Tall Buildings—Structure as Architecture.
