On Tuesday, November 28th, Mana Contemporary Chicago and SOM will host the third and final panel discussion in a series organized in conjunction with “SOM: Engineering x [Art + Architecture].” The pop-up exhibition, on display through January 7th, 2018, was produced by Mana Contemporary Chicago in partnership with the Chicago Architecture Biennial. The panel, titled “Collaborations in Art + Engineering” is presented in partnership with Ace Hotel Chicago.
The event centers on the unique process and history of collaborations between leading artists and SOM engineers—a subject that is depicted through models, drawings, and ephemera in the pop-up exhibition. Composed of artists, scholars, and engineers, the panel will discuss how such interdisciplinary collaborations can inform new ideas for artwork and architectural projects. The panel was organized to highlight the ways in which engineers and artists alike practice a poetry of inquiry, experimentation, and ingenuity.
Renowned artists and SOM collaborators Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle and Janet Echelman will join William F. Baker, SOM Structural and Civil Engineering Partner, and Alessandro Beghini and Nicole Wang, SOM Structural Engineers, as panelists. Caitlin Mueller, Assistant Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will moderate the panel.
