On Friday, April 6th, SOM Associate Director Kevin Conway will participate in a panel discussion at Dwell on Design in Los Angeles. Titled “Remaking the Public Realm Through Art,” the panel centers on an exploration of various projects in Los Angeles and other cities that extend the notions of public space and creative thinking.
The discussion is part of an hour-long featured speaker session by artist Janet Echelman. SOM worked with Echelman to incorporate her Dream Catcher sculpture into the design of The Jeremy Hotel in West Hollywood.
Conway’s presentation will touch on SOM’s long history of incorporating art into buildings and publicly accessible spaces. He will discuss how art factored into the lobby design of the New United States Courthouse in Los Angeles, and how The Jeremy Hotel project is an example of the integration of art, structural engineering, and architecture. Marc Pally, an artist and curator who specializes in public art and worked on the Dream Catcher project, will also participate on the panel.
Dwell on Design is a four-day design fair that features panel discussions, exhibitions, continuing education classes, seminars, and tours of homes in the Los Angeles area.
