Jennifer Pehr to Speak at Urban Design Forum Event

On Wednesday, October 18th, SOM’s Jennifer Pehr will take part in a panel discussion hosted by Urban Design Forum. Titled “Transform or Tear Down?”, the discussion centers on the question of how New York City’s arterial roadways can be repurposed to enhance the public realm.

According to the Urban Design Forum, New York’s major thoroughfares carry more than 700,000 vehicles into the city each day. Yet many of them, including the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, the FDR Drive, and the Belt Parkway, date to the midcentury and require renovation. Pehr and other panelists will discuss solutions for repurposing these roadways to support public transit, promote the development of green space throughout the city, and prioritize people over cars.

The Urban Design Forum facilitates conversation among civic leaders, designers, developers, and public advocates. “Transform or Tear Down?” is the fifth event in “Maintaining,” a year-long program focused on ways to strengthen New York’s physical and social infrastructure.
