Interior Design Magazine spotlights SOM’s work on the Los Angeles Bus Shelter Program, an ambitious civic project reimagining everyday infrastructure as a tool for equity, resilience, and design excellence. The feature highlights the shelters’ modular design, climate-responsive features, and minimalist form inspired by California Modernism.
Led by SOM, the multidisciplinary team has completed the first 150 of 3,000 planned shelters as part of the City’s Sidewalk and Transit Amenities Program. Designed as a flexible “kit-of-parts,” each shelter is built to adapt to its urban context, expanding shade, integrating real-time transit info, and enhancing rider comfort in neighborhoods most affected by heat and infrastructure disparities.
The project was also recognized by Fast Company’s 2025 World Changing Ideas Awards earlier this year, affirming its mission to deliver equitable and sustainable public infrastructure for Los Angeles.
