Meredith Bostwick-Lorenzo Eiroa, SOM Associate Director, will participate in a panel discussion titled “Getting Regional Power to the People: Solutions, Strategies and Case Studies” on October 29, 2014. Held on the second anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, this event will bring together architects, engineers and other regional stakeholders for a conversation on energy distribution.
Alongside Brendan Weiden, an electrical engineer at Jaros Baum & Bolles, Bostwick-Lorenzo Eiroa will present SOM’s Cornell NYC Tech Campus Framework Plan and the campus’ microgrid strategy. Smaller-scale versions of the centralized electricity system, mircogrids represent an alternative to the increasingly vulnerable power grid, which went down during Hurricane Sandy. Bostwick-Lorenzo Eiroa and Weiden will discuss how this technology will be used at Cornell’s campus on Roosevelt Island.
Other panelists will speak about energy distribution projects at Princeton, Coney Island, and the USDOE Solar Decathlon. Pat Sapinsly, co-chair of the AIA Committee on the Environment, will moderate the discussion.
