Dave Hauenstein knows how grueling cancer treatment can be.
“This is the scariest time of your life,” said Hauenstein, who spent about 10 years by his wife Julie’s side at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University during her long battle with breast cancer. “People struggle with living through this. It’s scary. It’s painful and tiring.”
That’s why Emory is building a new cancer treatment center focused on the patient, aligning clinical care with cutting-edge research. Emory University Hospital Midtown and the Winship Cancer Institute on Nov. 12 broke ground for the 17-story building at Peachtree Street and Linden Avenue.
“They are doing a dramatic change of their care model,” said Hauenstein, who spent months consulting with Emory on the building design. “It was a brave thing for them to include folks like me. I give them credit for bringing us to the table.”

New York-based architecture and structural engineering firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP and Atlanta-based May Architecture + Interiors are designing the new facility.
