For Craig Hartman, design partner with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, an office known for tall and large-scale, program-intensive buildings constructed in many parts of the world, a detached house is a decidedly unusual sort of project. His Sonoma County cottage marks his first venture into small-scale residential architecture after 40 years working as an architect of international acclaim in the civic, cultural, and corporate environment.
