On Monday, June 27th, SOM Design Partner Brian Lee will speak at the 2016 Annual Conference of the American Library Association (ALA) in Orlando, Florida. In a panel discussion called “Libraries: The Space to Be,” Lee will talk about SOM’s interactive, child-focused design for the Chinatown Branch of the Chicago Public Library. He joins experts in the subject matter of designing for children from Walt Disney Imagineering, the Center for Childhood Creativity, and more. The event is part of the President’s Program for the Association for Library Service to Children.
The Chinatown Branch of the Chicago Public Library serves as a new civic, educational, and social hub for Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood. It provides public gathering spaces tailored to the needs of the community, ranging from early childhood engagement to areas for teenagers and senior citizens. In April, the library was recognized with a 2016 Library Building Award, the highest designation for libraries in the United States, by the American Institute of Architects and ALA/Library Leadership and Management Association.
