SOM’s Journey as an SBTi-Validated Practice

Last year, SOM achieved CO2 targets validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)—a globally recognized organization that drives ambitious climate action across the private sector. This milestone underscores SOM’s leadership and accountability in aligning our climate commitments with the latest scientific consensus on limiting global temperature rise in line with the Paris Agreement.

As one of the few design firms validated by SBTi, SOM has established clear, measurable, and science-based targets to reduce carbon emissions across both our business operations and the projects we design. These targets reflect our commitment not only to decarbonize our practice, but also to influence broader transformation within the built environment through design excellence and innovation.

“Validation by the SBTi is not just a badge of honor—it’s a call to action,” said Sustainability Director Mina Hasman. “It challenges us to rigorously measure, report, and continually reduce our emissions, while supporting our clients and partners in doing the same. It’s about embedding climate responsibility into every decision we make.”

In accordance with our recently approved SBTi targets, we are actively implementing strategies to reduce our emissions and are committed to reporting annually on our carbon footprint and progress. This transparent approach ensures accountability and continuous improvement across our global operations.

“Having our emissions targets validated by the SBTi and then following through with lowering the emissions reinforces SOM’s long-standing belief that design has a critical role to play in mitigating climate change,” said Herman Calleja, Sustainability Lead. “Through measurable commitments and transparent reporting, we are holding ourselves to the same high standards we advocate for in our projects around the world.”

In addition to the progress outlined in our 2024 Climate Action Report, the data below presents SOM’s firmwide greenhouse gas emissions for the reporting period of January 1 through December 31, 2024, offering a clear picture of our current impact and the trajectory of our decarbonization efforts.
